Kenya has become a household name in the coffee world, known for their bright and juicy coffee that is distinctly Kenyan. So it is not surprising that there are close to 700 thousand coffee producers, where smallholder producers make up approximately 70% of it.
Along the hills that make up the Aberdare Range, in Murang’a County, lies the Kirimahiga Factory. Run and operated by the New KiritiFarmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.), where close to 800 smallholders producer comes through this factory to get their coffee processed.
Sitting at around 1700 meters above sea level and coupled with nutrients rich soil, makes it an ideal place to grow coffee. The harvest period runs from October to February and April to May. During the time of harvest, the coffee gets sent to the factory on the same day of the harvest where they’re washed and fermented with water from the nearby Gondo River.
This particular coffee has a “AA” grading, which is used to indicate the size of the beans. The ‘AA’ indicates that it is the largest size of beans in Kenyan coffee.
A well-rounded coffee where the notes play along the line of acidity and sweetness that leans towards more on the sweetness side with the flavours of apricot and guava with the mellow acidity of plum.
