Ethiopia Aricha Wubanchi

Primrose, PLC, a stakeholder in the supplier washing station, works directly with smallholder coffee farmers in the Aricha region of Gedeo County, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, to ensure high-quality, organic coffee. The majority of contributing farmers own less than one hectare of land and grow coffee as a backyard cash crop, intermingled with other subsistence crops like sweet potato, mangoes, and avocados. Primrose pays above-market prices for quality red cherry and offers cash incentives to ensure higher overall quality. The collected cherry is delivered to the mill, where it is floated, sorted, and then delivered to dry on raised beds for several weeks until reaching 12% humidity. The coffee varieties grown here are traditionally referred to as "heirloom," and many have been developed by Ethiopia's Jimma Agricultural Research Centre. Although Yirgacheffe is part of the Gedeo zone, it has been subdivided into its own micro-region due to its exceptional washed coffees. Coffee is the primary cash crop in the region, with farmers also growing a second cash crop, the "false banana," used for roofing and producing flour and fermented paste.
